Exemptions Granted

Transport Security (Aviation)

An exemption from SIA licensing has been granted to all those persons at airports provided to implement or be responsible for the implementation of screening, access control or other security controls, having been recruited and trained in accordance with Commission Regulation (EU) No 185/2010.

The exemption does not include contracted staff undertaking security duties at maritime ports or the Channel Tunnel.

London 2012 Olympics (LOCOG)

An exemption from SIA licensing was granted to certain individuals carrying out security services at the London 2012 Olympics. The exemption applied for the period from 1 March 2012 to 30 September 2012 and covered:

  • individuals who had successfully completed a recognised Bridging the Gap course or were at the time in full time higher education and who met certain other criteria;
  • in-house security staff carrying out their duties at certain certified sports grounds being used for the London Olympics football competition.

The exemption applied only to individuals employed for the operation of the London Olympics by a London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) official security provider, in relation to an officially designated London Olympics venue.
