Transgender Licence Applicants

We have a dedicated 'sensitive applications' process for transgender applicants, which you can use regardless of whether you are applying for a licence for the first time or renewing an existing licence. You can also use this process if you currently hold a licence and you wish to inform us of a change of gender.

Sensitive applications will be handled personally and in the strictest confidence by a team of two people: a licensing manager and a member of our legal team. You will have access to these individuals by email or telephone if you wish to ask any questions or raise any concerns. They will liaise with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), Disclosure Scotland and AccessNI when we conduct our criminality checks.

Please email sensitiveapplications@sia.gsi.gov.uk if you wish to use this process. When you do, please provide the following information:

  • Your current full name
  • Your previous name
  • Any previous licence or application numbers

We will respond with further details within ten working days. You must wait for a reply from this email address before submitting an application. If you don't then your application will be dealt with outside of the sensitive application process.
